» Is a chromosome and DNA the same? (Back)
No, chromosomes are paired packages that contain long segments of DNA. In humans there are 23 pairs of chromosomes. In 22 of those pairs, both men and women are basically the same. One of each pair is from the biological mother, the other from the biological father. The 23rd pair determines an individuals gender. In females this pair has two like chromosomes called "X". In males it has one "X" and one "Y," two very different chromosomes. The biological mother can only pass an "X" and the biological father can pass an "X" or a "Y".
